Abstract

Four paddocks (2 buffel grass and 2 Progrdes Desmanthus) where established and grazed for 16 months. A Gas Emission monitoring unit (GEM) was deployed in each paddock with 100 cattle per paddock. Botanals, faecal samples and cattle liveweights where recorded regularly. Liveweight gains was greater with Desmanthus. There was marked seasonal effects on performance and emissions with higher performance and lower methane in the wet seasons. Methane yield and intensity were reduced by Desmanthus in the diet.
