Abstract

For many years, lacustrine records of environmental change in northern Australia tended to be focused on the Atherton Tablelands, following the seminal work of Peter Kershaw, and around the coastal fringe. Not surprising, because the strongly seasonal nature of rainfall in the monsoon north meant that many 'lakes' disappeared in the dry season, and the record they contain was therefore degraded. In 2012, the Australian Research Council funded a one-year project to just 'have a look' at a bunch of sites in the Top End to try and locate sites in the savanna that would contain quality records of environmental change that extended to the time of first human arrival; many thanks to whoever reviewed the application! This led to a successful Laureate Fellowship application to develop the most prospective sites. In turn, in 2017, this work was taken up by CABAH. The broader program aimed at understanding environmental change over the last glacial-interglacial cycle around Australia, with the JCU Quaternary crowd contributing to the Top End Flagship.
