Abstract

[Extract] he recent publication of the updated ‘Culturally responsive speech pathology practice’ position statement (Speech Pathology Australia, 2025), reminds us of the importance of critical self-reflection as a key contributor to culturally safe speech pathology services. Similarly, one of the core capabilities of the Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA) Cultural Responsiveness in Action Framework (IAHA, 2019) is self-awareness. It is the recipient of services who determines whether the services are culturally safe or not. Cultural responsiveness is the practice that enables cultural safety to be experienced by receivers of services. Culturally responsive services are those that are action-oriented and strengths-based. Culturally responsive practice supports person-centredness that respects and values each person’s unique cultural identity, needs, preferences and strengths.
