Abstract

[Extract] The Global Gateway initiative of the European Union (EU) aims to strengthen geopolitical influence through sustainable investments in energy, transport, health, education, and digital sectors, mobilizing up to €300 billion between 2021 and 2027 (1). Global Gateway supports sustainable development and the global energy transition but lacks sufficient biodiversity safeguards, putting hotspots such as sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia at risk (2). To honor its commitment to halting biodiversity loss and achieving net biodiversity gain by 2030, the EU should update the initiative to include specific mechanisms that ensure biodiversity protection (1).
