Abstract

Caring has been considered the foundation of nursing practice for hundreds of years, but what does it really mean to care for others? This literature review used a critical interpretive synthesis approach to understand what is written about caring in relation to nurses caring for people with a mental illness in palliative care. People with a chronic and persistent mental illness (CPMI) are often excluded and neglected in society and in health care settings. Looking at the literature through the lens of feminist theory, we found that communication, autonomy, and empowerment are neglected issues in terms of caring and that stigma and siloing are highlighted as reasons why people with CPMI missed feeling cared for. We are now challenged to reimagine caring—can we, as Tronto (2013) has suggested, recommit and rethink our caring responsibilities?.
