Abstract

For Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, health and illness is intrinsically linked with land, sea, kinship, culture and spirituality. Prior to invasion and subsequent colonisation by the British, Australia’s Indigenous peoples lived a life that enhanced their overall health. 2 Following the arrival of the British, not only were they hit hard by diseases to which they had not previously been exposed, the ensuing colonial policies of dispossession and extermination followed by protection and segregation 3 meant that for many, their self-determination was eroded, along with their language, culture, spirituality and worldview.
