Graphs are not, as many students believe, simple unproblematic representations of the truth. The choice of axes, histogram or line graph, smooth curve or jagged line, averages or raw data, intersections with the axes, extrapolations and interpretations all reflect the writer's beliefs. This article investigates how various factors demonstrate underlying beliefs and how teachers can use graphs as a means to encourage critical reflection.
