Abstract
Cancer is among the primary causes of morbidity and mortality globally, making the discovery of new anticancer treatments critical. Over the last few decades, there has been a shift in interest in finding new anticancer compounds from medicinal plants rather than synthetically derived ones. Extensive research has focused on phenolic-rich botanical extracts to isolate pure bioactive phytochemicals. This study analysed recent research on the anticancer and therapeutic effects of several plant phenolic compounds and highlighted the anticarcinogenic potential of phytochemicals. Furthermore, the discussion is grouped into various structural classes of phenolic compounds, from simple structures with single benzene rings to more complex structures containing more than one benzene ring and chain substitutions. Notably, there is much more research reported on in vitro studies than on in vivo studies, indicating a need to move towards the latter, particularly for drugs that have significant anticancer activity at the cell and immune level.
