Abstract

This paper reviews the history of the Normanby goldfield from its discovery in 1871 to present. This goldfield represents one of the early gold mining communities established in northern Queensland. Initially promoted for its potential success, the Normanby showed some promise in its early years, as noted by Robert Logan Jack in his 1879 report, which highlighted the presence of profitable reefs and rich assays. However, Jack also pointed out significant challenges, including high operational costs and underdeveloped mining technology, which hindered the field’s success. This evaluation continued to affect Normanby throughout its mining history. In 1920, Government Geologist Morton acknowledged new discoveries and the potential for revival, emphasising the importance of ore treatment, which had been neglected in the past. Despite Morton’s optimism about the potential profitability of properly worked reefs, investor interest waned in the mid-20th century. The Normanby goldfield demonstrated resilience, driven by a community’s desire for economic viability, leading to efforts to establish a town with essential services. Ultimately, however, these efforts were insufficient to sustain the goldfield's economic viability.
