Abstract
[Extract] Dear Editor, Despite notable progress in polio eradication, the emergence of circulating vaccine‐derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in Papua New Guinea (PNG) reveals persistent immunization and surveillance gaps. Poliomyelitis, a highly contagious enteroviral disease, mainly affects children under five, with some cases progressing to irreversible flaccid paralysis or death [1]. Transmission is primarily fecal-oral, and the high rate of subclinical infections facilitates silent community spread. Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988, global incidence has declined dramatically, yet eradication remains elusive (Fig. 1).
