Abstract

[Extract] In this issue of the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Eilenberg and colleagues report the outcome of the first trial of metformin in patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) who do not have diabetes.1 The trial was conducted to test whether metformin could limit AAA growth and reduce the need for AAA repair or risk of aneurysm rupture in patients with a small AAA. Diabetes has consistently been associated with reduced prevalence and growth of AAA, and observational studies have suggested this may in part result from the diabetes drug metformin inhibiting aortic wall degeneration.2 Due to these observational findings, four investigator led randomised controlled trials were initiated.3
