Abstract

[Extract] Welcome to this Special Issue of the IFLA Journal, in which the Academic and Research Libraries section has brought together a diverse array of articles exploring current trends in academic and research libraries.

There is no doubt that the world has changed. Both the physical and the geopolitical climate of our planet has been transformed on the timescale of only a few generations. The impact on peoples, nation states, communities and institutions is being felt all over the globe. The feedback from these climatic changes – broadly understood – is felt across all sectors of societies, in politics, economics, demographics, technology and so on. This results in a complex situation as legal, technological, economic and other trends are in a continuous state of flux.
