Abstract

[Extract] Whilst the detrimental environmental impact of kidney care is increasingly recognised globally [1], the introduction of initiatives to reduce this impact continues to occur on a local level only. Further, this is largely the result of passionate individuals who feel and assert a personal responsibility to make change. To significantly ameliorate the environmental detriments, this needs to occur on a global scale. For too long, many have become too comfortable with the current model of kidney care, despite the demonstrable detriment to the environment through resource consumption and waste production. The resulting impact on climate change is further only likely exponentially increasing the incidence and prevalence of kidney disease [2, 3], and therefore the number of consumers requiring treatment with the current wasteful model. Nephrologists are however globally well-positioned to act [4].
