Abstract
Human activities and economic development have posed multiple challenges to the world’s resources and environment, such as global warming, resource depletion, and environmental pollution. Despite the signing of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, the rapid increase in CO2 emissions and the fast-approaching upper limit of global temperature rise have become difficult challenges to the successful realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To address these challenges, governments must act cautiously in pursuit of a sustainable future. Effective management of natural resources, investment in clean and renewable energy, and engagement in green innovation have contributed significantly to regional sustainable development. However, the role of dynamic resource-based capacities in managing environmental sustainability remains overlooked.
This special issue of Gondwana Research aims to present timely and valuable new contributions. These contributions include the latest research on environmental sustainability from the Asia and BRICS countries, which are among the most natural resource-rich regions, to introduce the implications of dynamic resource-based capacity for environmental management and sustainability. A total of 8 articles in this issue contribute to existing research and the environmental sustainability agenda, mainly in terms of the impact of clean energy on carbon neutrality targets and the critical role of green innovation. We provide a brief overview below based on the contributions collected in this special issue.
