Abstract

An understanding of clinical pharmacology is fundamental to the practice of veterinary anesthesia and pain management. This chapter introduces classical and receptor state theories, outlines receptor structure, and reviews terminology relevant to the clinical evaluation of drug effects. Fundamentals of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are presented, including considerations for pharmacokinetic experimental design and interpretation. Other important pharmacologic concepts, including constant rate therapy, drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, and drug metabolism are discussed.
