Abstract

Recently, events research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other queer (LGBT+) communities has increased as a segment of interest. However, despite this proliferation, the process of research into these communities explores experiences that are closely intertwined with negative experiences and trauma. Additionally, the pleasant experiences of tourism and events – have not received attention. In particular, autoethnographic research is less prominent in tourism and events studies, especially within the LGBT+ research space. Despite having a background in LGBT+ event volunteering, while conducting research within the LGBT+ space, the author encountered various hurdles and challenges within their methodology. This research involved participants from diverse sexualities and gender preferences. Furthermore, the author’s volunteering experience has now provided substantial insight into how to overcome these challenges while maintaining the integrity of the research. This chapter aims to provide insight into this research experience through autoethnography. This chapter uses self-reflection to discuss the author’s experience researching within the LGBT+ community – mainly focused on the bisexual and transgender communities. Thus, in keeping with the sentiment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, “No one is left behind,” this chapter aims to pave the way for further research into the LGBT+ space.
