Abstract
This chapter aims to give an overview of the main anthropological perspectives on the relation between valuation and society throughout the history of the discipline. Anthropologists have used the concept of value in different meanings and to address different questions and topics. These include: the exchange of things and labor; the constitution of social relations and personhood; the creation of society as a human project; the evocation of a cosmology as the context in which values provide direction and motivation for action. Attempts to integrate these aspects are also being discussed.
