Abstract

[Extract] Genomic sequencing has rapidly emerged as a powerful diagnostic tool in clinical medicine over the past decade. However, incorporation into everyday practice has often been hampered by many different factors, including lack of public reimbursement and inclusion within universal healthcare resourcing. ‘Who pays?’ is a key consideration for equitable access to genomic testing. A major impediment to genomic test reimbursement has been the limited empirical evidence to inform health technology assessment and reimbursement processes. Australian Genomics has substantially accelerated the generation and translation of such evidence in Australia,1 with the diagnostic and clinical utility of testing now being largely clarified for a variety of clinical scenarios and disease areas.
