Abstract

[Extract] Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) were responsible for 75% of the reduction in malaria prevalence in children aged 2–10 years across endemic Africa between 2000 and 2015. Since then, these gains have diminished and the African region as a whole is off track for 2025 WHO malaria milestones by about 50%.2 Significant hope rests on the next generation of ITNs, treated with either a second insecticide or the synergist piperonyl butoxide, to revert these adverse trends, that are, in part, related to the spread of pyrethroid insecticide resistance.
