Abstract

[Extract] In 2024, the annual IMD-SUTD Smart City Index (SCI) — whichranks 141 cities by how they use technology to address the chal-lenges they face to achieve a higher quality of life — rankedSingapore as Asia’s leading smart city and the 5th smartest in theworld. The SCI was conceptualised by the Smart City Observatory atthe Institute of Management Development (IMD) and the SingaporeUniversity of Technology and Design (SUTD) to assess the percep-tions of residents on issues related to structures and technologyapplications available to them in their city. Methodologically, theSCI rests on two pillars for which perceptions from residents aresolicited: (1) the Structures pillar, which refers to the existing urbaninfrastructure, and (2) the Technology pillar, which describes thetechnological provisions and services available to the inhabitants. Each pillar is evaluated over five key areas: health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities, and governance.
