Abstract

[Extract] TO THE EDITOR : We read with great interest the article by Seow et al1 that described the trajectory of performance status and symptom scores for patients with cancer during the last 6 months of life. Although we agree that previous studies were limited by small sample sizes, it is nonetheless interesting that we reported the same results in a study of 198 patients who completed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) at our center—namely that fatigue, lack of appetite, drowsiness, and shortness of breath increased as death approached, whereas pain, nausea, depression, and anxiety did not.
