Abstract

Acculturation refers to the process of adapting to a new culture. During the acculturating process, adjustment would be required for one’s cognition, emotion, and social aspects. Acculturative stress refers to the stress resulting from this process of adaptation and change. Among the acculturating population, international students have been found to experience high levels of acculturative stress, along with psychological distress that has been found to be highly correlated with the acculturation process experienced by international students. When international students pursue their higher education in a new environment, challenges would be encountered. Research points to English proficiency, cultural distance, and perceived discrimination as contributors to both acculturative stress and psychological distress among international students. Furthermore, acculturation strategy and social support are cited as having moderating effect on acculturative stress and psychological distress. As limited research regarding acculturative stress and psychological distress has been carried out in Asia, with the target population as international students, more research is needed to elucidate the relationship between these variables in order to gain insights and corresponding assistance to international students.
