Abstract
[Extract] Background and Aim: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a leading cause of hepatocellular cancer (HCC), with a 5-year survival of 23% if diagnosed early. It is estimated that about 37% of the population are living with undiagnosed HBV infection. Among people with diagnosed HBV infection, only 22.1% are engaged with care, for either monitoring or treatment. Current HBV screening strategies are targeted to high-risk groups, such as intravenous drug users, men who have sex with men, those with high-risk sexual behavior, people of Indigenous descent, migrants or refugees from countries with higher HBV prevalence, and those who are or have previously been imprisoned. Australia’s national strategy has set a target of diagnosing 80% of people living with HBV by 2023; however, with current strategies, estimates suggest that there is only a 4.6% chance that Australia will meet this target (NSW Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Strategies 2014–2020 data report, 2020). Therefore, different strategies are needed to increase HBV diagnosis. We aimed to assess the HBV prevalence within non-risk-factor populations accessing outpatient services at Blacktown-Mount Druitt Hospital.
