Abstract

The hydrogen and carbon isotope composition of n-alkanes were used to produce a high-resolution environmental reconstruction spanning 155-ka at Girraween Lagoon, tropical northern Australia. The record was securely dated by radiocarbon and OSL dating. It revealed very large changes from grassy to wooded savanna driven by changes in monsoon rainfall. In turn, rainfall was controlled by a combination of local insolation and sea level.
