Abstract

This study is concerned with the investigation and recording of the evolution of private, one-family dwellings in north Queensland, beginning with initial attempts to adapt familiar Anglo-Saxon structures to an unfamiliar environment. Developments in technology and communications, together with an increasing familiarity with the physical environment, soon led to changes in the early materials and style. Economic, social and cultural influences were also given expression in variety of materials, plan and style. A basic house type was evolved which functioned adequately in response to the total north Queensland environment, both physical and human. These dwellings are unique in terms of their spatial and temporal extent, being restricted essentially to the Queensland tropics between 1860 and 1920. The traditional tropical "bungalow" is the closest Australia has come to producing an indigenous architecture. Data are presented to illustrate the habitability of a stratified sample of early dwellings, representative of various designs, materials and locations.
