Abstract

Since 2020, an adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program was implemented by a team of clinical psychologists at Singapore’s sole public psychiatric hospital, the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), after pilot studies showed promising impact on symptom change. As resource-related barriers make it difficult to adopt a standard DBT program, modifications made to each of the modes comprised: DBT-/non-DBT-based individual therapy, 12 online/in-person weekly group skills training sessions, fortnightly consultation team meetings, and phone coaching rostered among the DBT therapists. Due to multiple interacting components in the program, many research trials do not investigate the impact of its individual elements. As the existing literature predominantly employs quantitative methodology, this study qualitatively investigates aspects of the DBT program that influenced treatment outcomes, based on clients’ experiences.
