Abstract

With the rapidly changing ‘internationalization’ of the educational market in Indonesia, the current introduction of the content and conduct of imported models of engagement are having an unintended impact on local practice, particularly in respect of culturally sensitive procedures and personal interactions (Allais, 2014). We acknowledge that whilst much of the substance of these imported models for training in the transport and logistics area may be applicable in an Indonesian context, it is becoming increasingly important to clearly appreciate to what extent aspects of these models are culturally appropriate in an Indonesian milieu, and to what extent do they need to be tailored for a specific situation. In this article we examine a suggested framework (Fairman, 2017)which has been purposely developed to guide the creation of industry-led vocational training systems suitable for use in Indonesia. It allows a transparent exploration of the importance of engaging Indonesian industry managers and local commercial stakeholders when designing occupational standards for a particular location. This article finally proposes a scheme of meaningful practice intervention which may improve external ‘engagement’ in Indonesia, in which we openly and respectfully recognize and acknowledge local engagement and ownership.
