Abstract
[Extract] A 74-year-old Swiss retiree without travel history presented to his general practitioner with a prolonged history of abdominal pain, stool irregularities, meteorism, nausea, loss of appetite, and weight loss of 17kg over several months. Besides mild blood eosinophilia (12%; 852/μl) routine blood investigations were unremarkable. Since all performed microbiological stool examinations (including multiplex PCR for bacteria and protozoa and stool microscopy for helminth eggs and protozoa) were negative, an esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed. The endoscopy showed several superficial mucosal erosions in the stomach and in the proximal duodenum, measuring ~5–10 mm in diameter, which were biopsied.
