Abstract

Tourism studies employing anthropological methods assess various business aspects. However, as a branch of anthropology to solve actual business problems, business anthropology is rarely used to illuminate the business aspects of integration with tourism. Hence, this paper reviews the leading literature that contains an intersection of tourism and business anthropology to ascertain which areas are focused. Adopting Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) protocol and Smith’s (2004) methodology of prioritizing documents, this paper searched 2091 documents sourced from Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science between 2000 and 2023. Two highly and fourteen moderately relevant studies were ultimately included. The review identified six themes: 1) cultural tourism commodities (highly); 2) advertising and marketing, functional and theoretical models, future development, corporate culture, and education (moderately). It found that many of the moderately relevant articles used only the term ‘business anthropology’ in the abstracts or titles without deeper analysis. This paper also identified and compared branches similar to business anthropology (e.g. industrial and commercial anthropology). Finally, this research offers a conceptual framework for the discussion of tourism within the business environment. Overall, this review suggests greater scope for the deployment in the study of tourism and its application to the tourism industry.
