Abstract

This research aims to explore touristification in museums, its influence in shaping social collective memory from visitors’ perspective. Touristification, the transformation of the original, to make it more tourist attractive, is argued to contribute to the evolving role of museums and in shaping collective memory. It includes interlinking concepts such as the democratization of information and monetization. Exploring the role played by each of these concepts in shaping social collective memory at museums, from visitors’ perspective is crucial to understand the influence. To achieve the aim, a deductive thematic qualitative methodology within a constructive paradigm was adopted. Purposeful and snowballing sampling has been used to gather respondents from different backgrounds, who have visited the three main historical and cultural museums in Singapore namely, National Museum of Singapore, National Gallery of Singapore, and Asian Civilization Museum. The results from the visitors’ perspectives implied five main themes: soft advocacy, nation building, loss & sadness, pre-colonial history, and post-colonial history. Themes support destination image, nation building efforts yet influencing collective memory.
