Abstract
[Extract] Charles Conder's While Daylight Lingers provides a beautifully apt image for this book's cover. Painted in 1890, the opening year of Mark Ream's study, the painting's subject is indubitably Australian while its style is unmistakably French impressionist. Conder lived only briefly in Australia, from 1884 to 1890, but while here he was a leading contributor to the Heidelberg School that transfigured the artistic representation of Australia's national identity.
