Abstract

One strategy proposed for improving the sustainability of tourism is the idea of shifting tourists towards more staycations in place of longer distance travel options. While there is no agreed upon definition for staycations, this chapter will explore the phenomenon of taking a holiday close to home (Draper, 2017), which can be accessed either by a short drive or using public transport, that specifically includes engaging in local commercial tourism activities and services. This chapter will take a systems thinking approach (Betley et al., 2021) to examine how staycations differ from regular recreation and tourism, how they can contribute to supporting tourism sustainability, and how tourists have responded to the various options and promotional campaigns conducted during the COVID 19 pandemic. It will then review the challenges faced by tourists, tourism providers and destination managers in shifting towards more staycations. This system thinking approach will map out the core differences between staycations and tourism in general highlighting the differences that support improved tourism sustainability and identifying the key leverage points in the system (McCool & Kline, 2020). The chapter will then focus on policy and management strategies that can be used to shift these leverage points to encourage greater use of staycations and more sustainable tourism.
