Abstract
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (the Quad), has drawn considerable attention in Australia, and beyond, since its establishment in 2007 and re-emergence in 2017. However, Australia has had a recurrent desire for a quadripartite grouping of states within the region. This paper examines early post-war debates on the need for a quadripartite grouping in the Indo-Pacific region. In doing so, this paper argues that Australia has long viewed regional strategy through the lens of a quadripartite grouping of like-minded states within the Indo-Pacific region, making the Quad more a perennial element in Australia’s strategic outlook than a recent development.
