Abstract

Moving goods (e.g. raw materials, finished products, or components) along supply chains in a timely and cost-effective manner requires well-integrated logistics. The performance of logistics has an impact on national, industry, and business competitiveness. One of the most important aspects of improving logistics performance is logistics infrastructure. The movement of physical goods requires a network of logistics infrastructure (e.g. logistics hubs, distribution centres, seaports) for companies to obtain raw materials and distribute finished products to end customers. As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries strive to develop their economies, this study conducted a qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles published in each country’s leading English language newspaper to investigate the types of logistics infrastructure projects initiated in recent years by ASEAN countries and the kind of impacts, particularly in terms of economic development, these projects intended to deliver. Analyses show that ASEAN countries have initiated logistics infrastructure projects ranging from logistics hubs and seaports, to roads and railways, among others. Project impacts were divided into six main categories (i.e. community development, competitiveness, economic development, logistics improvements, logistics networks, and spillover effects) with 17 subcategories. The findings of this study provide some important insights into the motivations for investments in logistics infrastructure projects.
