Abstract

Museum exhibitions are evolving spaces for storytelling, education, inspiring curiosity and creating wonder. In many cases, permanent or iconic galleries around a particular story or theme are maintained for decades. The Museum of Tropical Queensland is an excellent example, with the permanent, iconic gallery—HMS Pandora—remaining open to the public for 22 years. The popularity of this exhibition is well-known. Yet looking to the future, there are new opportunities to adapt, refresh and refine exhibitions such as HMS Pandora to maintain their relevance amongst progressive museum practices. This article aims to recap on the themes of the Pandora exhibition, how it has aged over 22 years and suggest some avenues for adaptation for the future of this iconic gallery.
