Abstract

[Extract] The French Collector: Journal and Letters of Théodore Leschenault, Botanist of the Baudin Expedition by Paul Gibbard, offers a unique journey into the discovery of a recovered manuscript. This pioneering work is the first translation of the complete text of Leschenault’s journal (1800–1802). In this publication, dedicated to his parents, Gibbard begins by drawing a comprehensive historical recount of the lost manuscript, providing details on the possible whereabouts of the journal over the past 200 years. Readers are also introduced to Leschenault’s early life and family, offering readers a different perspective of this man, who is otherwise briefly described as a botanist who had joined the September 1800 Baudin Expedition.
