Abstract

In Canada, one in five people will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Mental health care can be costly and difficult to access. For people with a chronic and persistent mental illness (CPMI) accessing mental health care can be difficult. This can be even more challenging and complex at the end of life. The foundations of palliative care are person centred, caring for and supporting the person and their family, improving quality of life and death, providing comfort, and maintaining a person’s dignity. These foundations are similar to the foundations of mental health care practices of person centred, relational practice, and recovery focused care.

This paper reports the findings of a project to understand the experiences and perceptions of mental healthcare providers about palliative and end of life care.
