Abstract

[Extract] Alan Garside was one of the nation's most experienced, practical, hands-on tropical field crop agronomists - a now dwindling band. His career was essentially one of the pioneer: exploring the potential for, and then developing field crop options in successive new regions or, as in the later case of his sugarcane work, in a new agri-system. As a consequence, Alan contributed significantly to scientific understanding of the complex interactions between crops and their environment and the implications for better crop management.
