Abstract
[Extract] This research project examines workplace interactions that were constructed in a virtual instant messaging space during the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). As COVID-19 border and social distancing restrictions forced many employees to work from home, the usual workplace corridors and staffrooms were no longer available spaces for workers to bump into each other and spontaneously start up conversation. McGloin et al. found those working from home shifted their face-to-face interactions to digital online modalities, and similarly, Tromer highlights, that online team spaces encouraged informal interactions. In the scope of this enquiry, the researcher looks at the changes in workplace instant messaging (IM) since COVID-19.
