Abstract
[Extract] Every person feels fear, sadness, joy, stress and relief. Every person can show others respect, anger, frustration and humour. Culture dictates the specific ways in which we express these feelings and beliefs in a physical and behavioural form. Understanding a patient’s cultural, family, spiritual, and racial background helps you engage the patient and understand where they are coming from.
As a doctor, if you can understand some of these cultural beliefs and practices it can help you understand about a patient’s behaviour or their beliefs about their own health. Once you understand that, you can consult with them in a culturally sensitive way that they can understand and appreciate.
