Abstract

From 1816 to 1818 large areas of the planet experienced unusually wet and cold weather, its cause mystifying scientific authorities and the general population alike and giving rise to far-fetched speculation - even in the far-off British colony of New South Wales. Only in recent decades has science begun to understand the causes of this weather and the range of repercussions, one of which was an apparent intervention in the El Nino Southern Oscillation cycle.
