Abstract

Social isolation is a prevalent health problem among adolescents worldwide. This study examines the prevalence and predictors of social isolation among 1,877 in-school adolescents aged 11-18 years in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The research comprised an examination of data obtained from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' Global School-based Health Survey, which was completed in 2018. Statistically estimated adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval was utilized to determine the predictors of social isolation using a multi-binomial logistic regression (CLs). The total prevalence of social isolation among in-school teenagers was 28.2 %. In terms of age, individuals aged 15 and above had a larger likelihood of being socially isolated than those aged 14 and below. Adolescents who had made plans to commit suicide had a higher risk of social isolation than those who had not made plans to commit suicide. In-school teenagers who drank heavily had a higher risk of social isolation than those who did not drink heavily Finally, adolescents who smoked cigarettes were roughly six times more likely than those who did not smoke to feel socially isolated. For the burden of social isolation to be effectively addressed among in-school adolescents effective interventional programs should be designed and integrated into school and community programs.
