Abstract
It is widely accepted that Australia’s geographical remoteness has been central in shaping the country’s development. It is especially true that geographical isolation of many patients and surgeons from other centres and treatment options will continue to shape the delivery of paediatric surgery to patients living in tropical areas. This chapter examines the options available to the authors in a first-world setting with a view to facilitating local expertise and resource utilisation in other settings. The first and most important component of information gathering relies on a carefully taken, guided history of the problem. Sometimes patients are critically unwell, in which case resuscitation and expeditious transfer to a larger centre are required; however, this is uncommon. In such situations, a clear history of the timing of any injury or onset of symptoms should be ascertained at the same time as initiating resuscitation and transfer.
