Abstract
Although the tropical environment shares many common features between different countries and cultures, one common theme is the relative paucity and undersupply of paediatric surgical services in all of these locations. Because of this, it is often necessary for patients to be transferred long distances to access healthcare services. This is particularly true in Northern Australia, where there is only one paediatric surgical centre in the whole of Northern Australia. Emergency patient transfers are expensive, sometimes dangerous and always inconvenient for families and patients. Retrieval can be subclassified into primary, secondary and tertiary retrievals. Retrieval Services Queensland (RSQ) provides clinical co-ordination for aeromedical transfer of patients across North Queensland, including the Torres Strait. They utilise multiple government and non-government organisations to achieve aeromedical coverage of Queensland, including the RFDS and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), QG Air Helicopter Rescue and Life Flight Retrieval Medicine.
