Abstract
Recognising pathology is important in allowing for appropriate and expeditious treatment of problems that do occur. It is often helpful to consider abnormalities of the external genitalia as either congenital or acquired. The most common congenital abnormality of the external genitalia is cryptorchidism. In the majority of cases, the external signs of hypospadias are obvious at birth but can be missed if a hasty or incomplete examination of the external genitalia is made. Commonly hypospadias is classified according to the position of the meatus in relation to the ventral surface. The surgical management of hypospadias is complex. There are a variety of different operations utilized. In distal hypospadias, the two most commonly performed operations are the Mathieu hypospadias repair or a variant of the Snodgrass procedure. The operative management of hypospadias is undertaken by specialist surgeons, and the results for distal hypospadias are excellent.
