Abstract

The majority of patients with appendicitis present in a more straightforward manner. Appendicitis is commonest in children between the age of 10 and 16 years. Most patients are best treated with a laparoscopic appendicectomy. It is important to be able to explain clearly to the family the reasons for the surgery, the expected outcomes and the risks of common complications. It is important to acknowledge the differences in anatomy between small children and young adults. For uncomplicated appendicitis, it is possible for patients to commence on fluids and diet as tolerated soon after the procedure. Whilst the principles of damage control surgery are the same in children as in adults, some important differences should be considered. Different surgeons have preferences for open or laparoscopic surgery, and they will often commence the surgery laparoscopically and progress to an open or laparoscopic-assisted procedure.
