Abstract

Traumatic injuries remain the leading cause of avoidable death and injury during childhood. Between 2001 and 2012, there were 686, 409 trauma-related hospitalisations in children in Australia. The rate of hospitalised cases for assault was considerably higher in remote and very remote areas compared with those seen in major cities. Despite the differences and difficulties encountered in our practice, the principles of trauma management remain the same as those utilised across all major trauma centres. A careful physical examination should be conducted, where possible the child should be kept warm and comfortable and comforted by parents or other caregivers. The vast majority of patients with a mechanism of blunt abdominal trauma can be managed conservatively. Paediatric surgery has been at the forefront of adopting a conservative strategy for the management of abdominal trauma, and children require intervention far less than adult patients with similar injuries.
