Abstract

[Extract] Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory condition arising from an imbalance in lipid metabolism and maladaptive immune responses. Atherosclerotic lesions result from the accumulation of lipids, smooth muscle cells, and several types of immune cells in the walls of arteries. The interest in vascular immunology research is growing exponentially and the multifaceted roles of the innate and adaptive immune system in atherosclerotic plaque growth or regression and plaque rupture or stabilization are being increasingly clarified. Notwithstanding, further knowledge is needed of the mechanisms regulating the quality and quantity of circulating immune cells and their homing and engraftment into the coronary, cerebral, and lower limb arteries. The study by Coppin et al included in this issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology suggests an important link between limb ischemia and progression of atherosclerotic disease in a distant anatomic site (Figure).
