Abstract

[Extract] The project: 'Development of an Expert System Embedding Pattern Recognition Techniques for Groundwater Pollution Source Identification' is comprised of two phases. The first phase involved the implementation of an optimization model that was proposed for the identification of unknown sources (magnitudes and locations) of groundwater pollution. This optimization model is intended to be used as a screening model for identifying a subset of potential sources belonging to an exhaustive set of potential sources. The utility of this screening model is to reduce the dimensionality (number) of the pollutant plume patterns to be matched by the pattern recognition algorithm in identifying the sources.
