Abstract
Objectification Theory developed by Fredrickson and Roberts (1997) provides a model for understanding how socio-cultural pressures surrounding the female body may lead to a number of negative outcomes for women. This paper reviews correlational and experimental studies relating to self-objectification and its influence on body shame, body anxiety and eating disorder symptomology in female samples. In particular, evidence for the relationships between constructs of the self-objectification theory is inspected, as well as studies which have highlighted how various factors (such as ethnicity, sexuality and exercise participation) may affect this. Substantiation for experimentally induced state self-objectification, through male interaction, gaze word priming, swimsuit wearing and exposure to the media is also examined. With this, gaps and limitations of current research on self-objectification is provided as well as suggestions for future studies aimed to comprehend body image disturbance in women. Clinical applications are also explored.
